Have you heard of period poverty? If you haven't, the term might sound confusing, or even scary. Period poverty is defined by the American Medical Women’s Association as the lack of accessibility or affordability of menstrual hygiene tools and educational materials, and the reality is that it makes menstruation both confusing *and* scary for millions of people across the globe. Basically, someone experiencing period poverty might not even have access to tampons, pads, or basic knowledge about their body on top of dealing with questions we've all had, like “can you have a period without blood?” and “what happens if I get my period during prom or graduation?"

In honor of International Womens Day, the Aerie Real Foundation has announced that they’ll be awarding a $50,000 grant to youth nonprofit PERIOD., an organization that aims to eradicate period poverty through youth leadership, distributing menstrual products, and fighting for period-positive policy. The $50k grant will be used to fund PERIOD.’s youth advocacy and education programs.

In addition, Aerie will be donating 1000 period undies to PERIOD. chapters across the country and featuring PERIOD. Youth Advisory Committee member Regan Moss in their first Body Literacy REAL Talk of 2023. The conversation will be happening at their Georgetown flagship store on March 26th, 2023.

American Eagle Outfitters will also be the first national retailers to become official PERIOD. Workplace Champions, which means that they promise to have menstrual products available in all office, store, and DC restrooms as well as allowing retail associates to take time off for period pains or other menstrual-related health issues.
